Actively increasing the number of Birth Workers of Color is not only a good idea but a necessary step to improve maternal health and the birth experiences of women of color. The maternal concerns that we face as African American or Black women during pregnancy and childbirth has not escaped my mind, heart and mission. In fact it is what propels me to do my part. I began my doula training in 2009 and at that time I was the ONLY African American Birth Worker in Central Arkansas. Then in 2014 there was 1 more African American doula serving Central Arkansas. That number has grown so much since then, now the hospital staff can tell us apart! I promise it was never hard to identify us separately. Contact me if you want to be a change agent for improving birth for Women of Color as a professional Doula. We need each other! I am here for it.
